D-Link announces Green Technology solutions

D-Link Green Technology

D-Link has announced its second-generation 5-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch which provides up to 73% reduced power consumption without sacrificing network performance.

The DGS-2205 is one of four environmentally friendly small office/home office (SOHO) unmanaged gigabit switches that will ship this year with newly enhanced power-savings.

The Green technology of D-Link conserves energy by recognizing when a port is active. It is also capable of altering power usage in relation to the length of its cable, conserving energy use for both the user and the environment without any loss of performance.

Even, when a computer is shut down, switches often remain on and continue to consume considerable amounts of power. Through D-Link Green technology, the new switches can detect when a computer is turned off and will respond accordingly by powering down.

Normally, switches send full power to cables regardless of the actual length. Through D-Link’s Green technology, the switches are able to analyze the cable’s length and adjust the power accordingly.

The incorporation of D-Link Green Technology into these DGS-2200 series switches re-emphasizes D-Link’s strong commitment to protecting the environment, leading the development of eco-friendly products that comply with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directives.

D-Link commitment to making its products more energy efficient is being appreciated by leading industry-watchers, such as PC Magazine and Laptop Magazine, which recently named the D-Link Green initiative the most innovative of 2008.

D-Link Expands Green Technology Initiative

In recent years, networking solutions provider D-Linkhas been greening technology to the computer networking space, and now its Green switches have gotten a bit greener.

The Fountain Valley, California-based company has expanded its role in the development of energy-saving products and initiatives by introducing green technology to computer networking through the introduction of its second-generation D-Link 5-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch (DGS-2205).

Steven Joe, president and CEO or D-Link Systems, said the DGS-2205 provides up to 73 percent reduced power consumption without sacrificing network performance.

"Our goal is to maintain industry leadership as a pioneer of Green networking technology by building in even more energy-saving features into our products without sacrificing performance," said Joe.

D-Link Systems is an end-to-end networking solutions provider for consumer and business, and the first company to introduce green technology to computer networking, according to Joe.

The DGS -2205, which is already shipping, is one of four “environmentally friendly” small office/home office (SOHO) unmanaged gigabit switches from the company that will ship this year with newly enhanced power-savings.

The next-generation D-Link 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch (DGS-2208); the 16-port (DGS-1016D) and 24-port (DGS-1024D) unmanaged gigabit switches will also receive enhanced power-savings later this year.

The computing initiative follows a greater trend throughout the technology industry that has seen an increased effort to bring “green” products to market. D-Link Systems says it focuses on manufacturing environmentally-responsible products, eco-friendly packaging, optimizing devices for ENERGYSTAR certification, and providing consumer education and recycling programs.

The DGS-2205 Green desktop switch can, when used for 10 hours and then powered down for 14 hours over a 24-hour period, and connected via Ethernet cables, represents a 66 percent energy reduction, according to the company.

D-LINK PIONEERS GREEN HOME WI-FI

In light of rising energy bills combined with growing pressure to reduce carbon footprint, D-Link has introduced the first eco-friendly home Wi-Fi routers capable of reducing energy usage by up to 40%.

The use of Wi-Fi networks in homes and offices is growing at a considerable rate. For home users that enjoy surfing the web, streaming movies from their PC to their TV or making internet phone calls, they can now do so knowing that they will not only be helping address the need for homes to reduce their carbon footprint, but also enjoy savings on their next electricity bill in the process.

The latest Wi-Fi routers integrate D-Link Green Ethernet; an innovative energy-saving technology that automatically detects connectivity status and cable length, and then adjusts power accordingly. The routers also feature Wi-Fi scheduling that allows users to easily program when the Wi-Fi radio signals are turned on and off to further save energy consumption.

The D-Link Green Wi-Fi Routers achieve optimal energy savings when used with the Wi-Fi Scheduler, which provides a user-selectable radio shutdown option (adjustable by day and start/end times). Under the most favourable conditions with no wired links active and Wi-Fi turned off, users may achieve the following power savings when compared to a D-Link conventional router without Green technology: DIR-655, up to 32% and DIR-855, up to 41%.

The introduction of the Green Ethernet enabled D-Link Wi-Fi router series is part of an ongoing company-wide Green computing initiative that includes manufacturing environmentally-responsible products, optimising devices for ENERGY STAR certification and providing consumer education and recycling programs.

The incorporation of Green Ethernet technology into Wireless N series routers re-emphasises D-Link’s strong commitment to protecting the environment, leading to the development of eco-friendly products that comply with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directives. The RoHS directive limits the use of specific hazardous materials during the manufacture of electrical and electronic goods while WEEE applies standards for proper disposal and recycling of products.

D-Link Looks to Green its Routers

As you look across your desk at all of the blinking lights from your computer gear, have you ever wondered how much energy your router sucks down? On the one hand, probably not that much. On the other hand it is on all the time. You could find out with a guilt-trip power strip. Or, you could turn to D-Link. D-Link is proposing a sort of middle ground by using its Green Ethernet technology on select wireless routers.

D-Link says it is the first to market with "green home network Wi-Fi routers." While that might just be a bit of marketing mumbo, it is nice to note this technology is reportedly capable of saving up to 40 percent in power usage. Several products across the company's Xtreme N line of routers, including the D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit Router DIR-655, D-Link Xtreme N Duo Media Router DIR-855 and the D-Link Xtreme N Gaming Router DGL-4500, are now making use of this Green Ethernet to "decrease energy costs by reducing power consumption without sacrificing performance." Could go very well with your new green Dell computer, and sweet external hard drive.

One can apparently get even better energy savings by using D-Link's Wi-Fi Scheduler, which provides a user-selectable radio shutdown option (adjustable by day and start/end times). Other initiatives focused on more environmentally friendly technology from D-Link include compliance with with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directives and optimization for Energy Star certification.

D-Link Expands Energy-Efficient, Eco-friendly Green Ethernet Switches

The world of networking gear isn't immune to the sustainability benefits of energy-efficient, eco-friendly features. Vendor D-Link is spotlighting that point with the expansion of its family of Green Ethernet switches aimed at SMBs.

Now available with 16 and 24 ports in addition to the 5- and 8-port models unveiled last year, D-Link's Green Ethernet Gigabit switches comply with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment). But for the cost-conscious IT admin, the products' energy-saving features may prove more alluring.

First, D-Link's switches are capable of analyzing cable length and adjusting power usage accordingly. Normally, switches send full power to cables regardless of the actual length. Cable lengths used by small-office and home user users are generally less than 20 meters, according to D-Link, so switch's power smarts can reduce energy consumption.

Second, D-Link says its Green Ethernet technology can tell when a connect computer is shut down and responds accordingly by powering down into standby mode and reducing power used for that port.

According to D-Link, when the DGS-2208 multi-port desktop switch is connected and then powered down, users could realize up to 80 percent savings in power usage; the other D-Link Green Ethernet switches could save up to 45 percent, according to the company. If the devices are used for 10 hours, then powered down for 14, you could save up 40 percent on energy with the DGS-2208 and 27 percent with the other switches. Those figures are in comparison to the energy usage of a D-Link conventional switch connected via 20m Ethernet cables.

D-Link Turns Green With Power-Saving Switches

Networking vendor D-Link claims its new range of 'green' Ethernet switches, which intelligently minimise power usage by up to 80 per cent, could be a massive hit for VARs selling into environmentally conscious corporations and markets such as education and government.

It showcased two products in its range, a five-port gigabit switch and an eight-port version, at the British Education Training Technology (Bett) show in London on 9 January. Higher-end products, 16- and 24-port gigabit switches, are expected to be launched in February.

The devices save energy by supplying only what is needed to power up the length of wire to which they are connected, explained Kevin Wen, D-Link’s European president. The switches’ in-built intelligence also enables them to power down if they detect that the device they are connected to is switched off.

"Most people in SMEs and schools want to save on electricity usage, but they dare not touch a comms box, as they do not know what it does. These boxes make the decisions for them,” said Wen. “These could be an easy sell to the growing numbers of environmentally conscious technology buyers."

Lloyd Everard, director of infrastructure at systems integrator SAS Group, said: “The green Ethernet technology were welcomed by the SAS Group. They are receiving significant interest from companies consciously looking to cut their energy consumption and carbon footprint.

"D-Link has stolen a lead by being the first to market. Better still, there’s no price premium," he said.

D-Link exclusively revealed to CRN plans to develop a Partner Plus channel programme.
"Our higher-end products could open up a new range of sales opportunities for high-end systems integrators and specialist VARs," said Chris Davies, D-Link’s general manager for the UK and Ireland.

"We need more specialist partners who can integrate the products into diverse networking infrastructures and management systems."

D-Link Unveils Industry's First Green Ethernet Technology

D-Link International announces the launch of the company's Green Ethernet technology and its new environmentally - friendly series of home/SOHO Gigabit switches in Southeast Asia -DGS-1005D, DGS-1008D, DGS-1016D, and DGS-1024D. D-Link is the first company in the networking industry to introduce the Green Ethernet technology in its Gigabit switches.

This innovative technology decreases energy costs and reduces power consumption without sacrificing operational performance and functionality, by recognizing when a port is active or inactive to adjust its power accordingly. It is also capable of altering the power usage relative to the length of its cable.

"This Green Ethernet technology initiative not only benefits both our ecosystem and Home/SOHO users, it also emphasizes our strong commitment to protecting the environment," said Peter Lim, Vice President (Southeast Asia), D-Link International. RoHS directives restrict the use of specific hazardous materials during the manufacture of electrical and electronic goods, while WEEE applies standards for proper disposal and recycling of products.

Green Ethernet TechnologyD-Link's Green Ethernet technology is specially designed to provide smart, automated power consumption reduction, by automatically detecting a link's status and cable length, and adjusting power usage accordingly, thereby benefitting users who may not need perpetual use of their computers or the use of all the ports on their switches.

By reducing power consumption, less heat is produced, resulting in extended product life and lower operating costs. Internal tests conducted by D-Link has shown that the DGS-1005D Gigabit switch is capable of a maximum power saving of up to 44% when connected devices are powered down, and a power saving of up to 27% when connected devices are used for 10 hours and powered down for 14 hours over a 24-hour period, via 20m Ethernet cables. The DGS-1008D Gigabit switch is cable of a maximum power saving of up to 80% and 40% respectively.
